Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) – Injected PRP Facelift Filler
Pre-treatment Instructions:
Do not do any medical grade aesthetic treatment while pregnant or ill. Before your appointment, Karla NP recommends to complete a pregnancy test before each aesthetic treatment if there is the slightest possibility that you might be pregnant.
BLOOD DRAW PREPARATION:
PLEASE DRINK plenty of fluids and WATER the day before and the day of your procedure. If you are dehydrated, it is much harder to draw your blood, and you will not have as much plasma.
THINGS TO AVOID TO MAKE YOUR PRP AMAZING:
- Avoid NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Advil, Excedrin, Celebrex, Midol, Indomethacin, Ketorolac, Diclofenac, Meloxicam, Aleve, Motrin, Naproxen, aspirin, and so on) for 7 days prior to your treatment and not resumed for 7 days after treatment. NSAIDs increase bleeding and bruising risk. Send me a message if you are unsure you are taking any NSAIDS. It is OK to take Tylenol (acetaminophen) as instructed on the package prior to your treatment as this does not thin your blood. NSAIDS block the action of your PRP growth factors, making your treatment less effective. Please consult with your primary physician prior to discontinuing any medications.
- Please stop blood thinning herbal supplements 7 days prior (including St. John’s Wort, Garlic, Vitamin E, Gingko, etc). Biotin based supplements DO NOT need to be discontinued.
- Corticosteroids, anti-coagulants, and blood thinners. If you are on these medications, you are not a good candidate for PRP treatments and should not have PRP treatments. The most common of these medications are Prednisone, Methylprednisolone, Prednisolone, Plavix, Dexamethasone, Coumadin (Warfarin), Lovenox, Pradaxa, Eliquis, Heparin, Xarelto, and many more. Send me a message if you are unsure you are taking one.
- Alcohol and Tobacco. Avoid alcohol 3 days prior to decrease bleeding and bruising. Chronic or excessive alcohol users’ ability to heal is not optimal, and PRP treatments may not be effective. Tobacco use greatly impairs healing, and PRP treatments may not be effective.
THE ACTUAL PRP TREATMENT DAY:
- Please arrive on time, so you will give me time to get you started on your intake forms and apply the numbing cream. You will want to wait the full recommended time before your PRP treatment.
- PLEASE COME with a CLEAN FACE WITHOUT MAKEUP OR SKINCARE PRODUCTS on your skin.
Post-treatment Care Instructions
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR PRP TREATMENT:
Swelling, redness, bleeding, tenderness, bruising, tingling, numbness, lumpiness, and/or feelings of pressure or fullness at the injection site(s) and/or in the treated area(s) are the most common TEMPORARY side effects and typically last 2 to 48 hours up to 72 hours. The remaining numbness should resolve in a few hours. If you have progressing swelling, discharge, redness at the injection sites or fever, contact me immediately as this could be an infection.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR TREATED AREA:
- BE GENTLE. Avoid massaging, scrubbing, rubbing, and applying pressure to the injection sites for 7 days.
- Avoid direct high heat (blow dryer, sun exposure, sauna, steam room, very hot shower, hot Yoga, strenuous exercise, etc) for 24 hours after treatment.
- Do not wash or get your treated skin wet for 8 hours after treatment.
- You may apply ice packs for 20 minutes every 2-3 hours after your PRP treatment to decrease swelling.
- Do not expose the treated area to chlorinated water for 48 hours after treatment (pools, hot tubs).
- Avoid NSAIDs (ibuprofen, Aleve, naproxen, aspirin) the day of your procedure and 7 days after your PRP treatment, for they interfere with the PRP effectiveness, which will make your treatment less effective and increase bruising/bleeding risk. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner without your primary care provider’s clearance.
- If you experience discomfort, you can use ice or take Tylenol as directed in its package.
- Do not drink alcohol for at least 3 days after treatment to decrease bruising/bleeding and improve healing and hence results.
- Avoid sun exposure to your face (or area treated) for at least 2 weeks. Always wear a zinc-containing sunscreen with a SFP > 30 and wear protective clothing (hat with a large brim, sunglasses, umbrella). The sun causes damage to your skin, even with 1 minute or 2 of exposure, making your PRP treatment results less effective. It can also cause discoloration of the treated areas that may be permanent.
- Make-up is not recommended immediately after treatment, but you can gently apply makeup 24-48 hours after. Please do not wash your face for at least 8 hours.
- Do not use scrubs, waxes, chemical peels, laser treatments, exfoliants, retinols, alpha-hydroxy acids, bleaching creams, micro-needling, or any abrasive treatment for 2 weeks. You can use gentle skincare products the following 7 days.
- No facials, facial massages, or laser treatments for 2 weeks afterward; most facials, chemical peels, laser, and light treatments may be done immediately prior to the treatment but not for 2 weeks after the treatment.
- Do not sleep on your face for 48 hours after treatment, and it is recommended to sleep with your head elevated for 2 days to help decrease swelling.
- MOST PATIENTS NEED MULTIPLE treatments to achieve optimal results and will require maintenance treatments to fight the nonstop aging progression.
- Remember that your body requires time to rebuild the treated area tissue, and while some patients might see the results immediately, others may need days or weeks to see results. It is possible that some patients will not see any results from the recommended series of treatment, and this is unpredictable.
- If you have any trouble with breathing, swallowing, or speaking after having a PRP treatment, or if your symptoms feel life threatening, call 911 or your local emergency number.
